Iaido, the Ancient Art of the Samurai sword, the Katana
"IAI-DO" is the art of unsheating the Japanese traditional sword, the Katana, and using it correctly with the right mental and physical presence.
It is practiced through the learning and repetition of "Kata" (pre-codified fighting forms) executed by oneself and against one or more imaginary opponents.
One of the most ancient martial arts in Japan, with origins in the 8th Century AD, it had its period of maximum development in the 16th and 17th Century AD and many of the forms still practiced today are from this period.
The execution of each technique requires the search for a perfect coordination of mind, body and breathing and leads, as a consequence, to develop a solid psycho-physical equilibrium and peace after much practice and constant application. Iaido is balanced in its movements, simple in its elegance and is deeply drenched in strong emotions: "one breath, one cut, one victory".
It is both a separate, independent, martial art and also a good supplementary practice for whoever already studies another Japanese art, as it is possible to find in it all the principles of each art pushed to their limits through the direct use of the sword.
Iaido's purpose today is to be a Way, open to everyone regardless of sex, physical fitness and age, leading to friendship, respect and honesty.
Our DOJO is the only one in Singapore under the umbrella and also following the practice of ZEN NIHON KENDO RENMEI IAIDO, the basic system codified, by the Japanese Federation (Z.N.K.R.) and its international equivalent, the F.I.K., out of many older traditional schools and with the purpose of creating a common base of learning, practice and judgement. In time, usually starting from First Kyu (Ikkyu) and above, we also integrate our training by studying and practicing the ancient sword style of MUSO SHINDEN RYU.
The Z.N.K.R. is the governing body for the three martial arts Kendo, Jodo and Iaido and guarantees a high standard of quality, access to the practice and consistency in levels, ranks and exams (including recognition) throughout the world. It also regularly organizes competitions, even for Iaido, during which it is possible to measure oneself against other opponents to verify the level achieved, the right direction forward, and especially the effects of practicing in a stressful situation.
