What is Iaido?

The Art of Drawing, Cutting, and Sheathing the Katana

Iaido (居合道) is the Japanese martial art of drawing the katana, performing a precise cut, and resheathing the blade with control and awareness.
Practitioners learn through the repetition of “kata” (pre-arranged forms), performed alone against imagined opponents. Each movement in Iaido refines the practitioner’s coordination of mind, body, and breath, fostering inner calm, focus, and discipline over time.

A Tradition Rooted in History

Iaido is one of Japan’s oldest martial arts, with origins tracing back to the 8th century AD and significant development during the 16th and 17th centuries. Many forms practiced today have been preserved from this period, maintaining the essence of samurai swordsmanship.

Why Practice Iaido?

  • Develop mental focus and discipline.
  • Enhance posture, balance, and breathing control.
  • Experience the elegance and precision of katana use.
  • Gain inner calm and emotional control through regular practice.
  • Complement other Japanese martial arts with advanced principles of timing, distance, and precision.
“One breath, one cut, one victory.”
Iaido is open to all, regardless of age, gender, or fitness level, serving as a Way (Do) to cultivate friendship, respect, and honesty through practice.

Iaido at Shuhari Dojo, Singapore

Shuhari Dojo is the only Iaido dojo in Singapore affiliated with the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR) and the International Kendo Federation (FIK).
We practice ZNKR Iaido (Seitei Iaido), a system codified from various traditional schools to provide a consistent, high-standard framework for learning and grading recognized worldwide.
As students progress (typically from 1st Kyu/Ikkyu), we also integrate Muso Shinden Ryu, a classical sword style that deepens understanding of the katana’s use and Iaido’s principles.
ZNKR and FIK affiliation ensures:
  • High-quality instruction and recognized grading standards.
  • Opportunities to participate in international seminars and competitions.
  • Access to a global Iaido community for shared growth and practice.
